This work is split into three primary publications that were the result of our research. Chapter 1 includes the current findings from our insecticidal fogging of selected trees in central Taiwan. The goal was to rapidly incread ground-beetle (Coleoptera, Carabidae) collections in Taiwan. Three species of tree including Machilus zuihoensis Hayata, Ficus irisana Elmer and Neolitsea variabillima (Hayata) were fogged seasonally between August of 2013 and July of 2014. In total, 697 carabid beetle specimens were collected during the year-long sampling period, representating 12 tribes, 17 subtribes, 35 genera, and 76 species. Ficus irisana was found to have the highest diversity with 28 species of carabids being collected from it over the course of the study. Twelve to twenty percent of ground beetle species captured were either new to Taiwan or new to science. The second chapter is a taxonomic review of the pericaline ground-beetles of Taiwan. As a result of this work, a much better understanding of the pericalines represented in Taiwan was developed. This paper describes or re-describes 34 pericaline species (nine new), from 14 genera (one new) and five subgenera. Four new synonymies, one new combination, and one status resurrection are also recognized. Work from the third chapter resulted in the publication of a new genus record for Taiwan and a new species for the genus of Dromoceryx (Coleoptera: Carabidae). A revised key to all species of the genus is included. I conclude with some final thoughts on the state of taxonomy today.
