This is the first study of comparing clay natural fabric dyeing between Taiwan and Japan. We targeted aboriginals of Taiwan and inhabitants in Amami-Ohshima of Japan as our cohorts for their similarity of being originated from Austronesian. Our first aim is to track back their historical developments, surveying the evolutional changes from characteristic styles and underlying cultures differences between Taiwan and Japan. Our second aim is to compare their differences in current techniques and propose a new model for future clay natural dyeing industry in Taiwan. Furthermore, we analyzed the constitutions of soil in Taiwan. Our result showed that the iron component of soil in Taiwan, which is a determining factor for natural dyeing, is not as sufficient as previously reported in Japan. Future establishment of a scientific quality-control way for clay natural fabric dyeing in Taiwan would be a key to resolve this limitation.
