When taking part in professor Ling-Yu Huang ’s “Taiwanese Folk Music” course in 2003, I started to be interested in “the Rituals of Shi-Gang Shiang”, a traditional temple fair held at three-year intervals in Shi-Gang Shiang, Tainan. During the field investigation, I learned that the “Wen-Wu Lang Jiun” of the San Wu Jia Jen Shan Temple in Jia-Li Jen, Tainan, is the only “Wen-Wu Lang Jiun” martial arts performing troupes in Taiwan. Thus the aim of my study is to examine this martial art performing troupe’s unique and rich musical heritage. As a descendant of Jia-Li Jen’s ancestry, I also devote myself to preserving the legacy of local culture by means of my study.
To meet the objectives with regard to “The ‘Wen Wu Lang Jiun’ Troupe in Taiwan”, my study includes following tasks:
1. Explaining and describing the term, the historical background, the costumes, and various styles of the “Wen-Wu Lang Jiun” troupe.
2. Interpreting the original manuscripts, tracing the songbooks to know how they were documented.
3. Analyzing the vocal and instrumental parts respectively from the collected audio/video sources, examining the characteristic style of the “Wen-Wu Lang Jiun” troupe’s music.
At last, offering my opinions and suggestions toward the topic, and reaching the conclusion. It is my expectation that the outcome of my study would highlight the significance of the “Wen-Wu Lang Jiun” troupe in Taiwanese folk music, and such a rare survival of Taiwanese martial art performing troupes should be appreciated as well as properly handed down.
