This dissertation proposes an agent-based coordinationmodel for virtual organization. The model incorporatesbusiness processes and Petri Net concept, and thenintroduces a virtual Petri Net System. In order to accountfor the coordination between subsystems, this dissertationalso introduces an agent construct into the model. Theintroduced agents, not only perform the regulartransformation processes, but also are responsible for thecoordinations among the agents. To a virtual organization, the core resources, themarket place and the process flows are the critical factors.As organizations become more and more virtual, there aremore needs to reengineer the virtual organizations throughall three aspects. Our reengineering methodology is thenmore general than the traditional ones, and is especiallysuitable for reengineering the virtual organizations. Our proposed reengineering methodology composes ofresponding to market place, allocation of internal/externalresources, and optimizing the work flows, in order toaccomplish the goal of organization virtualization. In anintensive case study, we apply the methodology and show howto reengineer an organization toward virtualization, whichprovides promising results.
