Distribution line carrier is one of the media alternatives available for providing two-way communications between the substation and various feeder locations. Distribution line carrier propagation measurements reported in previous literatures have shown that the propagation of signals on a power distribution line is difficult to predict due to the complexity of distribution systems. Analytical tools that can analyze signal propagation on the distribution lines would facilitate the study of this communication scheme for distribution automation. In this paper, an efficient approach based on three-phase bus admittance matrix and sparse matrix and sparse vector techniques is proposed to calculate the received signal voltage at any feeder point. Sparsity techniques used to reduce execution time and memory space requirement. This Analytical tool is used to analyze the effects of frequencies, transformer types, loads, and network configurations on distribution system line carrier signal attenuation.
