For constructing tunnels passing through shallow slope, the interactionbetween slope and tunnel is an important factor which should be carefully examined in addition to check the tunnel safety itself due to topography and geology. In this study, the interaction behavior between the slope andthe Hsinnten(I) Tunnel of Northern Second Freeway is examined by consideringthe factors of geological condition, topography, and construction sequence. The deformation of slope and tunnels are studied under different construction sequence. The effects of back-fill at the toe of slope to the deformation oftunnel are also studied. It is found in this study, the deformation of the slope will be significantlysmaller if the slope could be pre-stabilized before the tunnel construction.The side-gallery method indeed can reduce the tunnel deformation and unevenbehavior. The back-fill at the toe of slope is proved a very useful action whiletreating a deformed tunnel under shallow slope.
