Chinese Medicine is the medical achievement of the Chinese people, the result of their clinical trial and error and experiences accumulated for thousands of years. It is a system not only about the medicine for treating diseases and enhancing health but also a medical theory developed by ancient Chinese, with very distinct Chinese characteristics due to the unique historical and humanity environment which it has evolved in. Since ancient times, most of the application and classification of Chinese herbs by Chinese people follow the concept of the "Five Elements", in an attempt to reach the ideal state of “unity with heaven and humanity”. It also shows a close relationship between the theoretical foundation of the "Five Elements Theory" and Chinese medicine. The central theme of this creative research is to understand how the development of ancient Chinese herbal medicine and relevant books reflect numerous Chinese features, such as Chinese history, culture and natural resources the land possesses.
As the scope of traditional Chinese medicine is wide and the elements it covers are extensive, the researches first begins with literature analysis and exploring the actual herbs, whose results are transformed into elements that can be used for creating the human image. The elements are then used to design characters representing different Chinese medicine herbs and embodying characteristics of both modern anime and Chinese culture. For the means of creative expression, the researcher mixes and matches different graphic materials and layers them on various backgrounds, so that Chinese medicine and treatments can be personified and visualized with art and computer graphic techniques. In the research about anthropomorphic “images of traditional Chinese medicine”, the researcher finds that the integration of Chinese herbs and human images can generate special and fun visual effects. When the people see these Chinese medicine images, they gain better understanding and greater insights into the cultural value of traditional Chinese medicine.
