Effects of menstrual cycle on metabolic responsesto high- intensity exercise were studied in exercising females. Eight female subjects during follicular (6-9 days after menses) and luteal (5-9 days after ovulation) phases of the menstrual cycle were investigated. They received no contraceptives . They were 18.6±0.6 yr of age,163.1±1.3 cm of height,55.3±2.2 kg of Weight,and 2.3 ±0.1 L/min of VO2peak. They were investigated at 90% VO2peak to exhausting. Occurrence of ovulation was con- firmed in all subjects by measurement of oral temperature and progesterone concentration. The concentration of serum proges- terone increased from 1.29±0.29 ng/ml in follicular phase to 4.86±1.35ng/ml in luteal phase. Exhausting time、 serum pro- gesterone concentration and serum estradiol concentration at 5 min after exhausting were higher in luteal phase than in folli- cular phase (p<0.01,p<0.05,and p<0.05). The blood glucose level was lower in luteal phase than in follicular phase (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in serum testosterone and blood lactate concentrations between follicular and luteal pha- ses. Negative correlation between serum estradiol and blood glu- cose concentrations in luteal phase (r=-0.336,p=0.054) was obser- ved. There was no significant correlation among blood lactate、 serum estradiol and serum progesterone concentrations. These results indicate that the increased exhausting time du- ring luteal phase is associated with an increase of the serum levels of both estradiol and progesterone. These data suggest that exercise performance can be stimulated by an additive sy- nergistic effect between estradiol and progesterone.
