Browsing the internet has become part of daily lives since the popularization of the World Wide Web. The internet has also become the medium for information sources and expansion to interpersonal relationships in the E-Generation. The Internet has provided a fast and convenient channel and environment, allowing us to search information, study and play games online, shop and make friends, it has become an important area for modern day activities and communications. However, even though the internet has brought qualities of convenience and entertainment to modern day lives, there are a number of problems accompany with it; these include cybercrime, on-line pornography and addictions etc., these behavioral problems have caught attentions to the public.
The social networking websites have a prosperous development over the recent years, they are not just merely for social networking; through the use of internet it can group people with similar interests together and provide them with functions to maintain relationship and communicate with each other. Such social networks allow connection with friends, friends of your friends and other unknown individuals. And it can also broadcast social events to a wider range of people.
This research study aims to discuss the influential effects of social networks to the interpersonal relationships in reality and in cyberspace, and help us to understand the characteristics and differences from different backgrounds, level of participation and interpersonal relationship on both sides. To achieve these objectives, this research study adopts the research tool from self-constructed survey sheet “Level of participation and interpersonal relationship in social networking”, the research adopts stratified sampling with its sample group as internet users, and analysis will be conducted on an effective sample size of 319. Analysis of the sample size will be based on statistical methods of percentage, mean value and ANOVA (analysis of variance). Building interpersonal relationships through social networking websites has become a modern day phenomenon; using these websites as a medium has satisfied the needs for interpersonal relationship of individuals. Individuals who are not apt to socializing can benefit from the continuing expansion of their social networks to improve their interpersonal relationships in the real life. In the sense of belongingness, individuals who are good at socializing tend to think that social networking websites can help to change one’s interpersonal relationship. The study also shows that the level of participation in the social networking websites has no significant correlation with how well one can build relationships online; however, if any individual is doing well on their online social networking, this tend to reflect in reality as well.
