JPEG是現今的一種影像壓縮技術,壓縮率高,在某個壓縮率底下人眼所能識別的視覺效果很好。但是要用更高的壓縮率來壓縮影像的話,則會產生區塊效應(block effect)。此時為了因應日漸而來的高畫質影像,為了得到較高的壓縮率,所以產生了JPEG2000這個技術。JPEG2000是由 The Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) committee 在1996提出最新的一套的壓縮技術,在此套技術上,我們能夠更輕易的提升壓縮率,而且其視覺效果卻絲毫不比JPEG遜色,反而有過之而無不及。
