這本小小的論文包括了四個部份. 在簡介部份, 我大致描述了作者的背景和Chicana文學. 在第一個章節探討了寫作技巧和本書的形式. 作者欲顛覆傳統寫作手法的意圖十分明顯. 在第二個章節中, 我討論了空間和本書的關係和運用. 空間和自我的發展, Chicanas的生活, 有色女性的角色和作家有者連結.

In this thesis I have tried to look at both Cisneros'' techniques and her major themes in terms of the image of "space" and the problem of "self-identity." This "composite novel" wants to create a "space of their own" for the Chicana community, for those Mexican-American women who struggle against sexism as well as racism and are thus doubly marginalized, a "double minority." These women''s lives have become too "narrow," due to socio-economic factors. To a certain degree these women have let themselves become victims, and Cisneros wants to help them set themselves free by showing them the way to create a new identity for themselves, that is, a new subjective "space."
This thesis consists of four parts-- an introduction, two body chapters, and a conclusion. In the introductory chapter, I briefly sketch Sandra Cisneros'' background, and the Chicana literature. In the first chapter, the writing techniques and the form of the book are being examined. Cisneros has tried to rebel against the writing format of traditional literature. In the second chapter, the idea of "Space" is being discussed. The definition of "Space" is tied to the development of Self, to the lives of Chicanas, to the role of the woman of color and to the role of the writer. In the conclusion, I briefly summarize the important ideas of the thesis.
