As a result of improvement of the health care system, aging, the change of life-style and obesity has increased the prevalence of diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus was on top 5 of the cause of death in Taiwan in 1995, indicated it has became a major diseasethreatening the health of people. The purpose of the study was to investigate the circumstances and correlations of family support, life satisfaction, self-care behaviors and glycemic control in people with NIDDM. One hundred and forty one patients were selected from the metabolic OPD of a pre-medical center by purposive sampling. The data were collected via structered interviews or self-reports. The major results were as follows : 1. The level of patients'' family support and life satisfaction was upper-middle ; most of them were " often " compliant to self-care behaviors ; and the glycemic control was good and fair in 34 % of the patient. 2. Family support was positively correlated to life satisfaction and self-care behaviors, and it had no significant differences in glycemic control. Patients'' life satisfaction and self-care behavior(exercise) was positively correlated, self-care behaviors (medication taking) had differences in glycemic control. 3. Using heirarchical mutiple-regression, self - reported glycemic control, self - reported health , life satisfaction and family support explained 11 % of the variance of self-care behaviors. The study findings are helpful to the nursing professionals to promote family support , life satisfaction , self-care behaviors the quality of life, diabetic control and well-being for DM patients.
