Register is part of system-functional linguistics. It is the variety of a language used for a particular purpose or in a particular social setting. Elements that influence register include field (the purposes and topic of the conversation), tenor (interrelations of the participants) and mode (the channel which conveys the conversation). Different languages have different ways of expression. Therefore, during the process of translation, a translator needs to recognize the register of the source text in order to produce a target text that is close to the original text. The Harry Potter series, both the original English and the Taiwanese translation version, has been well received among the public, being influential to the society. Therefore, one of the books, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, in the series is selected as the material for this research. In this research, register in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and its translated version are analyzed, and further discussion of the strategies the translator used to handle register variation between two languages is included. In this research, it is expected to categorize the register analysis methods and the translation strategies for register variation.
The methodology used to analyze register in this research is based on the eight components of speech situation proposed by Biber in 1988, including ‘participant roles and characteristics,’ ‘relations among the participants,’ ‘setting,’ ‘topic,’ ‘purpose,’ ‘social evaluation,’ ‘relations of participants to the text,’ and ‘channel.’
Registers of characters in the materials are analyzed in this research, including both the source text and the target text, and the field, tenor and mode of the materials are also identified. The next section of analysis is to categorize the translation strategies the translator adopted to handle the register variations. Seven categories of speech situation are identified, including a) narrative, b) joking, c) excited or surprised, d) provocative, e) angry, f) worried and g) pondering. Further analysis of the translation strategies for the seven categories is included. After analyzing, four translation strategies adopted by the translator of the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban are concluded, including a) adding words, b) using different degrees of formality, c) using different metaphors and d) imitating. Among the above strategies, ‘adding words’ and ‘different metaphor’ are the most common translation strategies adopted by the translator in the research materials.
