凱特．蕭潘女士(1850-1904)在遭受長達半世紀的誤解與冷落後，如今已成為美國文壇的重要作家。她擅長描繪人性的渴望及人類對自我的追尋，尤其是女性追求自我實踐時所面臨的困境，其坦率、深刻的文筆深受讚揚。這位誠摯且勤奮的作家，在短短十餘年的創作生涯中，出版了兩本小說及上百篇短篇故事。繼她的代表作《覺醒》廣受推崇後，批評家也開始注意到她的短篇故事，認為可以躋身美國一流的短篇故事之列。本論文旨在選譯蕭潘女士的短篇故事，並評介她所呈現的主題及寫作技巧。
評介分為四部分。第一部分簡述蕭潘女士的作品特色及重新受到文壇重視的來龍去脈。第二部分評析她的短篇故事所呈現的女性婚姻生活的主題及寫作技巧。婚姻制度始終是蕭潘女士探討女性生活的重要主題，在此我將討論她所呈現出來的各項相關課題，例如婚姻與愛情、婚姻與性、婚姻與女性的事業、婚姻與奴隸制度以及婚姻與女性的自我追尋。第三部分討論翻譯她的作品遭遇的問題及解決之道。我後來發現選譯的四篇故事中，有兩篇楊美惠也曾經翻譯過，我一併討論我們譯文的異同。最後一部分是總結。

Kate Chopin (1850-1904), after suffering from more than half a century of misunderstanding and neglect, is now established as one of the important American writers. She is highly praised for her frank and incisive portrayal of human aspirations and pursuit for identity, especially women's quest of self-realization and its following predicament. In scarcely more than a decade of literary career, the earnest and hardworking author published two novels and more than one hundred short stories. After her masterpiece, The Awakening, has won universal acclaim, many of her tales are arousing increasing critical recognition and ranked among the first-rate American short stories. This thesis aims to provide a Chinese translation of Chopin's selected stories and to introduce her main themes and artistry in those stories.
The introduction is divided into four parts. The first one briefly summarizes the characteristics and the critical rediscovery of Chopin's works. The second one focuses on examining her presentation of woman's marital life and the writing techniques demonstrated in those selected stories. In Chopin's probing of women's inner world, marriage, the age-old and all-important institution, has been the predominant theme. Here, I am going to discuss how she presents the various facets about marriage such as marriage and love, marriage and sex, marriage and woman's career, marriage and slavery, and marriage and female self-quest. Part three deals with the problems that I encounter in rendering her stories. After finishing the rendering, I find that Yang Mei-hui had also done the translations of two stories included in my selected list. I then compare her version of translation with mine in this part. The last part is a brief conclusion.
