This study investigates two aspects of phonological processing in Mandarin syllables, the lexical bias effect and phonotactic constraints. In this study, there are two hypotheses: (1) Mandarin phonotactic constraints affect non-lexical syllables. If Mandarin phonotactic constraints affect the occurrence of non-lexical syllables, non-lexical syllables tend to be PAGs (phonotactic accidental gaps), which obey phonotactic constraints, instead of SGs (systematic gaps), which violate phonotactic constraints. (2) The lexical bias effect exists in Mandarin. If the lexical bias effect exists in Mandarin, the occurrence of lexical errors is more frequent than that of non-lexical errors. Spoonerisms, induced by phonological bias technique, were the data and three experiments were conducted to test these hypotheses. In Experiment 1, the results showed that the induced errors tend to be lexical, and this supports the existence of the lexical bias effect in Mandarin. In Experiments 2 and 3, the results showed that SGs instead of PAGs tend to be changed and this implies that Mandarin phonotactic constraints affect non-lexical syllables.
