This study is to investigate the acquisition process of potential expressions in types of verb conjugations and meaning functions from Japanese learners in Taiwan, including the acquisition orders, acquisition features, frequency of potential verb forms, and then the effect of textbooks on learning in potential expressions. Therefore, this longitudinal study of LARP at SCU (Language Acquisition Research Project at Soochow University: Japanese Language and Literature, Soochow University Students Database) analyses the forms of potential expressions through Japanese compositions written by Taiwanese University students studied in Japanese Language and Literature Department within three and half years and tries to find out the difficulties in the acquisition process of potential expressions. This study consists of 8 chapters. Chapter 1 is an introduction for motivation of this study, and also for the purpose of this study, the structure of this study. Chapter 2 is literature reviews which are concerned with potential expressions within the Japanese linguistics and education fields. Referring to the prior researches about the definition and category of potential expressions to figure out classification standard of this study. Chapter 3 is the outline which details in the survey subjects, data research approach, and the calculation standard of potential expressions frequency. Chapter 4 is the result and analysis of the survey. It describes the result of Japanese learners' acquisition in potential verbs usage, and details in every learner's tendency and characteristics for this study. Furthermore, the correct and incorrect usage, acquisition concludes in comprehensive comparison and analysis. Chapter 5 is the orders in which potential expressions are presented in the textbooks including Japanese grammar, reading, conversation etc. This chapter examines the orders which are taught in the Japanese textbooks and compares the results with the learners' acquisition process in order to understand the influence on the potential expressions learning. Chapter 6 is the survey of learners' potential expressions acquisition for correct usage tendency, incorrect usage tendency, and acquisition order, compares with the order of potential expressions in the textbooks. According to the survey, making comprehensive exploration. Chapter 7 summarizes new finding of this study to submit suggestions in Japanese education, meanwhile points out future research directions and issues. Chapter 8 is the conclusion. It is concluded that this study starts from research thinking, research process to complete the survey of this study, and then submits the conclusion. Also attempting to submit recommendations for the future Japanese language education in Japanese potential expressions. It is hoped that this study will make some contribution to Japanese language education.
