This thesis comprises four parts. The first part describes the synthesis of fan shape Alkoxy benzyl and aryl functionalized imidazolium salt. The liquid crystal behavior and self-assembly property were discussed.

In the second part, the liquid crystalline gold nanoparticles were prepared. To synthesize AuNPs via modified the Schiffrin’s two-phase method with imidazolium salt without additional stabilizing agent is reported. These AuNPs show good thermal ability and liquid crystalline SmA behavior. The temperature dependent SPR bands are observed for these AuNPs.

In continuation to our previous works are present in the third parts. This work collaborates with Josh Y. Z. Chiou, parts of data have been presented in the doctoral thesis. In this chapter, Ag(I)- and Au(I)-NHC complexes were synthesized. Thermal and photoluminescence properties of these complexes were studied. The gold compound shows different emission colors as crystal, soft materials, and thin film. Results of PXRD, Raman and IR studies suggest that a stronger Au-Au interaction has a smaller emission energy, and comes with weaker hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions.
