　　圖書館作為提供各項知識與資訊的傳播機構，必須不斷維持蒐集及供應知識與資訊的管道暢通無阻，圖書館服務讀者資訊需求的基本功能方能達成，這也是為何各國圖書館界如此重視知識自由的原因。
　　知識自由的用意在於提醒圖書館員如果要對讀者接近與使用館藏資源的過程做出任何限制，必須完全回歸專業。
　　本研究欲瞭解鄉鎮圖書館從業人員對知識自由之態度的現況，及其與鄉鎮圖書館從業人員各項背景因素間的關係，以提供鄉鎮圖書館作為教育訓練時的參考。
　　本研究根據文獻分析結果，配合各項背景主題，設計問卷，對台、澎、金、馬地區縣（市）境內之鄉、鎮及縣轄市公所所成立的公共圖書館及其分館發出問卷，進行普查。
　　研究結果顯示目前鄉鎮圖書館從業人員對於知識自由的態度在現況上仍有可加強的空間，而從業人員對於知識自由的態度在某些方面的確與其背景有關，可據此研擬相關教育訓練措施，讓此一觀念更受到重視。

Libraries as communication agencies must keep open the channels that provide knowledge and information for acquiring and circulating the information in order to meet the basic service. This is also why intellectual freedom is so appreciated by the library sectors in every country.
Intellectual freedom implies that in the occassions that restriction to access library collections must be imposed, the professionship of librarian must be insisted.
This analysis is designed (1) to collection information about the current status of the rural librarians'' attitudes toward intellectual freedom, (2) to find the factors that affect librarians'' attitudes toward intellectual freedom, and (3) to accordingly offer suggestions to those who are obligated to provide further training for rural librarians.
To perform the aforesaid analysis, questionnaires that are based on analyzed result of documents about intellectual freedom and that are in corporated with local librarians own background themes are designed and dispatched to all the rural librarians in Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matzu.
The result of the survey indicates there is still a lot of space for imporvement about librarians'' attitude toward intellectual freedom, which is affected by their own personal histories, and thereby some educational training courses can be designed so as to clarify their inherent deviant concepts.
