The purpose of this study is to explore the drum craftsmanship and community drum music, the purpose is to establish data on the drum-making industrial art’s history, construction methods, and types in Hsienhsi, Changhua County, in order to preserve the cultural assets. Literature is used to analyze the song halls and martial arts halls from each village. Then, field surveys are used to analyze the community drum music of Hsienhsi Township. There is traditional drum music: Nanchang beida, community drum formation, lion formation; there is also the escort drums, community theater, percussion music innovation performance art in school club activities, and school art education. Qualitative research is conducted through collection of secondary data, participant observation, and interviews. The research conclusions are: Yongan drum craftsmanship has had a 60 year history of the social industry, it retains the ancient Chinese method of drum-making. It does not use nails, and uses a horizontal wood, round wooden stake, triangular brick, hemp rope, and other natural materials for drum-making. Irreplaceable handmade quality constructs product value, and interacts well with the community, thus it was ultimately able to survive by adapting to society. Percussion music demonstrates the life culture of the commoners, and demonstrates the rich aspects of the times. The community development association plays the important role of combining drum craftsmanship and drum music for innovation development. School art education carries out cultural heritage. The traditional lion formation and escort drums have leapt onto the performance art stage, and the government, community, and schools have all cooperated to extend the custom of art formation cultural spirit. Changhua County’s Hsienhsi Township promotes drum music through overall community creation, civil clubs, and school art education. It is hoped that the government can legislate to protect traditional industry, plan heritage classes, and pass on drum craftsmanship, and in the future, utilize innovation and register it as a cultural asset of Changhua County, and continue the vitality of the traditional culture of drum crafts.
