In the communication technology era, the ways people contact each other have beyond the limits of the time and the space. For many young people in Taiwan, attending universities is the first time to leave home and to stay in another city. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the communication between parents and undergraduates in central Taiwan using anonymous questionnaire. The sample size was 1209 undergraduates, including 624 males, 584 females and 1 unidentified. The findings of this study were as follows. First, undergraduates usually contacted parents by face-to-face, Line and phones. Additionally the frequency of contacting between undergraduates and mothers was more than the frequency of contacting between undergraduates and fathers. What’s more, the reasons undergraduates contacted their parents were greetings, reporting schedule and chatting, while the reasons parents contacted undergraduates were greetings, asking when to go home and something happened at home. Second, for both genders, undergraduates contacted mothers daily more often than fathers, and mothers contacted them daily more often than fathers. Third, in terms of socioeconomic status, father’s education levels and the family monthly income could affect the variety of contacting tools, while mother’s education levels were not. Fourth, the responses to fathers’ and mothers’ calls and messages were not exactly the same. Furthermore, when undergraduates agreed to immediately answer their parents' calls, the more they disagreed to ignore the call and messages from their parents. Finally, based on the above mentioned findings, this study made some suggestions to undergraduates, parents and future study.
