This work investgated the characterisitics of the generated soot particles, the stability of the formation rate, and the products from the reactions of gaseous species. Actylene was chosen as the fuel burned to generate soot particles. The carbonaceous and water-soluble contents of the collected samples were analyzed off-line. The results show that the majior composition of soot particles is elementalcarbon, no sulfate was detected but nitrate was in a minor fraction. The formation rate of the soot particles was not stable. For the reaction between SO2 and soot particles, sulfate was detected in the collected samples which implies that SO2 reacted with soot particles. From the comparison of sulfate and nitrate measured in the collected samples, it is inferred that a competition might exist between SO2 and NOx for the reaction with the soot particles.
