論文提要
本研究旨在借助政治心理學探討威權國家領導人之「人格特質」與「政治繼承」的關係。在假設上，本研究認為除了特定歷史時空的客觀環境和制度結構因素外，「人格特質」對威權國家之政治繼承過程和結果是有影響的。
根據文獻指出，社會遠因和近因會對政治行為者的人格特質產生影響。社會遠因包括較大的政治、經濟和社會系統，直接會影響個體所處的社會近因環境。而社會近因包括行為者的家庭背景、出生排行、與家庭成員的關係、童年經驗、學校教育、社團、宗教信仰、職業、從政經歷等，這些不同時期的的成長經驗會直影響政治行為者的人格特質。當人格特質形塑後，不同人格特質會對任內的政治繼承問題做出不同的行為和反應。
本研究選擇馬哈地和李光耀為個案研究。就馬哈地個案而言，馬哈地所處的社會遠因和近因形塑他內控型、支配性、低開放性和權威性四項人格特質。此四項不同的人格特質，影響馬哈地任內四位政治繼承人的更替。首先，馬哈地的內控型和低開放性人格，使得馬哈地只允許接班人有「限度的開放」競爭。例如，慕沙希旦的脫穎而出及安華接替嘉化峇峇的位子即受到內控型和低開放性人格的影響。其次，馬哈地的權威性和支配性人格，使他在面對接班人的挑戰時採取立即的反擊，並親自選定一位不具威脅性的接班人出任副手。嘉化峇峇和阿都拉的例子，即是受到馬哈地權威性和支配性人格的影響。
就李光耀個案而言，李光耀所處的社會遠因和近因形塑他的內控型、支配性、開放性和權威性人格。內控型人格促使李光耀意識到繼承問題的危機，並很早就開始有計劃地準備第二代領導人的培訓。開放性人格使李光耀對權力觀具有較正面的看法，並允許他親自挑選出來的政治領袖「公開、自由競爭」。可是，權威性和支配性人格又促使李光耀展現他對權力宰制和防衛的一面；在培訓第二代接班人的同時，透過修憲以確保總理和總統之間可以相互制衡，並留在新政府中擔任內閣資政以確保新加坡的「安全」。
質言之，本研究發現威權國家的領袖人格特質深深影響其任內的政治繼承過程和結果。

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of leader character on political succession in authoritarian states. The main hypothesis of this thesis is that, a leader’s character has impact on the process and outcome of political succession in an authoritarian country.
As psychology theory suggests, a person’s character is affected by distal social antecedents and more enduring social environment or context. Distal social antecedents include distal facts of politics, economics, history, etc., which will contribute to the distinctive features of the environment in which he was socialized and the immediate situations in which he acts. A person’s more enduring social environment include one’s family background and relationship, birth order, childhood, schooling, associations, religion, occupation, political career, all these will affect and construct a person’s character. A person’s outer behavior could be explained by his character.
Two prominent political leaders, Malaysia’s prime Minister Mahathir and Singapore’s former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, are selected as two cases to test the hypothesis. On the case of Mahathir, according to the study, Mahathir is considered to be internal control, low openness, authoritarian and dominant. Mahathir’s internal control and low openness, which allow his successors to have a very limited competition. On the other hand, Mahathir’s authoritarian and dominant character made him tolerate no challenge. He would fight back and end any challenger’s political life instantly without any hesitation. Due to his character, Mahathir prefers his loyal supporter to be his potential successor. Musa Hitam and Anwar Ibrahim’s “out” and Ghaffar Baba and Abdullah Badawi’s “in” are the reflection of his own character.
On the case of Lee Kuan Yew, Lee Kuan Yew is considered to be internal control, openness, dominant and authoritarian. Internal control character made Lee Kuan Yew have a well-thought plan for his succession. His openness character allowed second generation leaders to contend the leadership. These character led Goh Chok Tong to succeed Lee Kuan Yew as prime minister. On the other hand, Lee Kuan Yew’s dominant and authoritarian character made him worry about his successor and Singapore. Therefore, before stepping down, Lee Kuan Yew pushed Singapore’s constitution revised and stayed in the new cabinet as senior minister.
As these case studies show above, the hypothesis of this study is upheld.
