The objective of this study was to search the most fundamental building blocks of the concept maps. We started from the local view of the concept maps.By putting a structure on each concept, we were able to analyze the linking ofthe concept map. This local structure of each concept is called the local concept map (LCM). We then use the LCM to reconstruct the thought of a student''''s problem solving strategy. The concept map which is used to describe the thought of the problem solving is called the working concept map (WCM). This WCM does have very simple structure and can be easily analyzed. Hence a student''''s misconception can than be easily identified. The equation of degree one with one variable was the mathematical subject of the study. We first set up a collection ofLCM which are related to the equation of degree one with one variable. Using this collection of LCM as the backbone, we designed a questionnaire to detect students'''' understanding and comprehension of certain subject. We found out thatthe Val/ASE0 of the Kappa of the most questionnaires are higher then 1.96. This gives a strong support of using LCM and WCM as tools to detect students''''misconception.
