Taiwan is located in the circum-Pacific seismic zone, earthquakes occur frequently, and will result in a considerable threat to the national highways. A earthquake up to ML = 7.3 (CWB) in Richter scale occurred in Taiwan On September 21, 1999, the maximum ground acceleration is 989gal. However, the national highway bridge structures in the 921 earthquake passed the test and carried the important task of the transport in the relief work. Do not meet the Ministry of Transportation issued in April, 2000, the latest seismic code requirements and bridges will be conducted seismic retrofit design and construction. In this study, literature review, case analysis and questionnaire survey according to the National Highway bridge seismic retrofit. From statistics and analysis of the questionnaire content, the National Highway bridge seismic retrofit conclusions and recommendations were proposed. This study emphasized on pier foundation and pier retrofit method. In accordance with the actual construction at the scene and encountered the difficulties and construction of safety, analysis of each work method difficulty of construction and engineering methods security and strategy. Hopefully it can be taken as a reference for the future seismic retrofit.
