Trees play an important role in water-ink landscape paintings. No matter what we paint a forest at far distance, a single tree near by, a tree’s shape, a tree trunk’s bark, or a foliage, we have to handle it deliberately.
This thesis developed an interactive prototype of “semiautomatic trees plant system”. This system transforms a real world’s terrain geometric model into a 3D water-ink style painting, and renders water-ink style trees on it as well. This work also allows users the 3D scenes freely.
We detect the silhouette in according to the viewing direction and the polygon’s
normal. Then we determine the edge’s visibility by using depth buffer method. Furthermore, we improve drawing style to generate better water-ink terrain by using the “suggestive contour” technique.
This system generates water-ink trees and foliages. A tree’s edge lines are drawn with varying widths and intensities based on the contours of those edge lines. Methods of convolution surface and cloud shape are applied to generate the foliages.
The real world’s plant ecosystems in the real world are emulated in this work. We simulate the characteristics of plant ecosystems, such as clustering, and competition.
Besides the rendering method mentioned about, we allow users have some degrees of interactive controls. Users can determine the location of trees, the types of trees, and the depths of vary layers of fog…etc.
