ABSTRACT
The advent of the Internet with its robust capacity has greatly advanced the status of technology-enhanced learning in the foreign language classroom. The Internet has played a crucial role in delivering knowledge to learners (Ali, 2003; Ng, 2006). The use of integrated technology in the curriculum and in learning activities seems to have become a new paradigm and learning in the EFL context.
Thus, the aim of this research was to investigate EFL pre-service teachers’ perceptions of implementing English learning websites in teaching. Three popular English learning websites were singled out as one of the major resources to be used for materials design and language teaching in this project. The participants were ten pre-service teachers enrolled in a service learning course; they were required to carry out weekly one-on-one on-line tutoring in a computer lab to disadvantaged primary school students in a remote area. To evaluate the appropriateness of the learning websites, a set of evaluative criteria for English learning websites were also established. The collected data involved evaluative sheets for English learning websites, interview transcripts, the researcher observation notes and teaching reflections from ten pre-service teachers participating in this study. A mixed approach was employed in the study. The quantitative analysis of the evaluative sheets on the websites was conducted through descriptive statistics. Main-point analysis was used for qualitative data from teaching reflections, observation notes and interviews.
Although technical problems had sometimes interrupted the joy of learning on-line, results of this research revealed that English learning websites were not only helpful, but beneficial for pre-service teachers to integrate online materials into the class. Meanwhile, the participated teachers showed positive attitudes towards the use of websites in facilitating teaching in their future career. It is suggested that English websites, once carefully selected and employed, can be powerful for language learning and teaching. The proposed criteria can also serve as a good reference for the selection of websites for language teachers and learners.
