Due to the academic value and practical applications, the objective of this dissertation is centered around the developing of a voltage stability index and the implementing of a computer program for voltage stability analysis. The main contributions of this dissertation are: (1) To propose a block incremental algorithm to calculate the minimum singular value of the power flow Jacobian matrix as an index ofvoltage stability; (2) To develop a widely convergent load flow method to be utilized to simulate the load flow process for a longer duration up to voltage collapse; (3) To implement a sparse matrix technique basedpractical computer program for voltage stability analysis considering loadgrowth pattern, reactive power limits of generators, transformers tap changer control , the generation commissioning etc.. The implementedprogram can not only provide the desired voltag stability index fora specific operating point, but also can provide the operating margin to voltage collapse for the same system condition; (4) Finally, based on the developed program, thorough voltage stability analysis of a practicalpower system is made. This includes evaluating the effects of the voltagestability due to tripping or addition of transmission lines, the addition of static capacitors, modes of load shedding etc..
