This thesis is based on the masterpiece of Vladimir Nabokov Lolita. First of all, the background of Lolita’s publication and the public’s correspondence of the book are introduced with a brief history of Vladimir Nabokov. Moreover, under the issue of love and passion, the thesis applies the psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan about the splitting egos, substitution, and castration fear as the main approach. Through this approach, Humbert Humbert’s passion of nymphets is analyzed. Also, Vladimir Nabokov’s dictatorial authorship and passion of beauty are also illustrated with the comparison of his double image Humbert in this book. Nabokov’s rejection of Freudian theory is another perception in this thesis to discuss the relation between his fantasy and creativity. Moreover, the rich doubling characters in Lolita and their relations are also proposed to illustrate Humbert’s substitution of desires and Nabokov’s own images as both the reader and the writer. Finally, corresponding to the opening question about whether Lolita is about love or desire, the discussion leads to Humbert’s narcisstic love and morality.
