摘要
過去文獻多著重於西方先進國家企業規模與創新能力之探討。極少文獻放眼於新興工業化國家的研發。我們以台灣與韓國電子資訊業為例,研究台韓企業規模與創新產出之間的比較。除了以專利數作為研發產出變數外,我們還以不同的加權方式調整專利品質數,以求得較為精緻的研發產出變數。
本文採用NBER專利資料庫中劃分屬台灣與韓國(country of first inventor)的專利數與專利相關的引證數等資料為基礎。以資訊電子業為主要研究對象,包括半導體業、通訊產業、資訊產業與光電等產業為研究對象,探討企業規模與創新實力之間的關聯性。
我們發現當被解釋變數為專利數時,兩者之間存在很強的正相關。但如果以調整品質之後的專利數為被解釋變數來看,企業規模與研發產出兩者間就不存在這麼單純的關係。大規模的企業對於製程的創新等邊際報酬較低的R&D計畫較中小企業熱中,因其可透過量產短期獲利,故大企業的絕對專利數比中小企業來得多,而中小企業可能擁有較佳品質的研發產出。
