本論文雖然提及《荒野之狼》以及《納爾齊斯與歌爾德蒙》這兩部長篇小說創作的時代背景、主要人物及次要人物的模型塑造以及敘事學的人物分析理論，但貫穿全文的重點是對於《荒野之狼》的主要人物哈里‧赫勒以及《納爾齊斯與歌爾德蒙》的主要人物歌爾德蒙的人物模型的探討。

所處的立場與整體社會的發展背道而馳讓哈里‧赫勒陷入了精神上的困境。在與哈里‧赫勒的互動中，赫敏娜、巴布羅、瑪麗亞促使哈里‧赫勒在穩定的心理狀態下融入一般人的生活，重新面對充斥著敵意的現實世界並找出繼續活下去的方法。

歌爾德蒙的母親的行為讓歌爾德蒙在少年時被父親送進修道院學習。在修道院的見習修士納爾齊斯的引導下，歌爾德蒙放棄了成為神職人員這一個人生目標，進而離開修道院，展開自我追尋的旅程。與麗迪婭、維克多、尼克勞斯、萊娜等人的互動讓歌爾德蒙體驗到價值觀不同造成的衝突、流浪生活的殘酷現實面以及雕刻藝術帶來的啟發。這些體驗幫助歌爾德蒙重新找到人生目標，完成自我實現。

小說藉由哈里‧赫勒以及歌爾德蒙的人物塑造呈現了一個不受到時代以及地區局限的人物模型：一個必須在探索自我的過程中選擇自己的道路的人。在這一個過程中，他同時必須面對其他人在作出選擇時對自己產生的影響。

The following work gives details of the historical background of the origin of Steppenwolf and Narcissus and Goldmund and a profound analysis of the characters in these two fictions. Yet, this work puts a major emphasis on the analysis of Harry Haller’s and Goldmund’s development of personality – the main characters of Steppenwolf and Narcissus and Goldmund as model of Hesse’s concept of personality.

The apprehension about social development in Harry Haller’s times causes him psychosis. Hermine, Pablo, and Maria bring Harry Haller back to the social life. He calms down again and finally realizes that he has to learn to live in the harsh reality.

Because of the shameful behavior of Goldmund’s mother, his father sends him to the monastery in his youth. However, under the influence of novice Narcissus, Goldmund gives up his goal of becoming a clergyman. He then leaves the monastery and starts to think of his life through wanderings. At the meetings with Lydia, Viktor, Niklaus, and Lene, Goldmund experiences conflicts rooted in differing values. He experiences the hardness of vagabondage and a creative urge as a sculptor. In this way Goldmund eventually finds out his goal in life.

With Harry Haller and Goldmund, these two fictions represent the following model of personality: an individual has to answer these two questions “Who am I?” and “How do I Live?” and makes a decision for himself for the purpose of finding his satisfaction. Nevertheless, his fellow men may also influence him and help him make the decision.
