Abstract

Constituting the largest proportion of Southeast Asian women immigrating to Taiwan for marriage, Vietnamese brides are becoming prominent research subjects in an emergent area of interest. A significant concern in Taiwanese society and the academic world is whether these foreign women, with their insufficient understanding of both Taiwanese culture and Chinese languages, are capable of raising and educating their so-called “New Taiwanese Children” well. Nevertheless, there has been little attention paid to the mothering expectations of the women themselves. The purpose of this study is to redress this gap. It investigates Vietnamese immigrant mothers’ child-rearing beliefs and socializing practices from a cultural point of view.

Thirty Vietnamese women residing in Puli, Nantou County, Taiwan participated in this study. They have at least one child with their Taiwanese husbands and the children range in age from 1 to 15. Due to the intricacy of the socialization process within Taiwanese- Vietnamese transnational marriage families, which are described as “linguistically and culturally heterogeneous communities,” my study is conducted with an ethnographic approach (20 months in the field). Semi-structured interviews were conducted in the native language of the participants. Each interview lasted approximately ninety minutes or longer and was tape- recorded and transcribed verbatim. The in-depth analysis reveals that the focal mothers choose Mandarin, Taiwan’s official language, as the main language to socialize their children.

Nevertheless, they manage to transmit Vietnamese cultural heritage to their children, for the mothers’ own upbringing and early experiences influence their parenting behaviors in subtle yet significant ways.
