本研究是以模場規模之蓄熱式觸媒焚化裝置(Regenerative Catalytic Oxidation, RCO)及實場規模之蓄熱式焚化裝置(Regenerative Thermal Oxidation, RTO)，處理排氣中揮發性有機物質(Volatile Organic Compounds, VOCs)，模場處理VOCs成份分別為丁酮（MEK）及甲苯(Toluene)；實場為丁酮及油漆溶劑(丁酮、二甲苯、乙苯及乙酸乙酯)。模場之實驗設備係一組雙床式(20 cmψ x 2 mH x 2)RCO，蓄熱床以不�袗�製作；實場之實驗設備係一組雙床式(1.0 mLx 1.0 mW x 2.0 mH)RTO，蓄熱床以碳鋼製作，兩者之蓄熱床填充材為級配石(Gravel)，其粒徑為1.25公分。
試驗時模場操作風量分別為440與710 LPM，利用電熱式加熱器將觸媒燃燒床溫度控制在400℃，以約2小時一個循環的方式操作，針對不同高度之蓄熱填充床材料內部與氣流之溫度加以監測記錄。兩個填充床在不同高度均裝設有氣體採樣管，所採集的氣體樣品以GC-FID分析，進出口端以攜帶式GC-FID監測計錄VOCs濃度，以了解其破壞去除效率。實場操作風量分別為10、12、20 NCMM，利用電熱式加熱器，將蓄熱材上半部溫度預熱到所需操作溫度(低溫約200~500℃,高溫約400~700℃)，溫度及濃度監測同模場。
模場研究評估RCO，當空塔停留時間為0.372 m/s，床平均溫度為225℃時，壓損約44 cm H2O，所需電能3.52 kWh，丁酮破壞去除效率大於97 %，甲苯則大於90 %。實場研究評估RTO依不同操作條件下，結果顯示在級配石溫度300~500、200~300、500~700及400~700℃，氣體在該溫度之間級配石停留時間分別為0.86、1.07、0.39、0.41秒時，VOCs之平均破壞去除效率分別為92、84、98及95 %，系統之壓差分別為10.94、8.34、29.10及23.0 cm H2O，熱回收率分別為92.0、86.0、97.0及91.3 %，所需電熱分別為 0.60、0.13、3.25及2.38 kWh。

Performance studies on the treatment of VOCs in air streams by a pilot-scale regenerative catalytic oxidizer (RCO) and a full-scale regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO) were conducted.
The pilot-scale RCO was constructed with two 20-cm x 200-cm (inside diameter x packing height) regenerative beds packed with gravel (average particle size = 1.25 cm) used as the thermal regenerative solid material. Experimental results indicate that destruction efficiencies of 97 and 90%, respectively, were obtained for methyl ethyl ketone and toluene at a superficial gas velocity of 0.372 m/s (evaluated at 25℃) and a maximum bed temperature of 400℃. It was estimated that an electrical thermal energy of approximately 84 kWh was required for treating 1,000 m3 of the waste air stream by the RCO.
The full-scale RTO was constructed with two regenerative beds of 100-cm square x 200-cm height packed with the gravel used in the RCO. A paint solvent containing methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl benzene, xylenes, and ethyl acetate was used for the target VOCs. Experimental results indicate that, at a superficial gas velocity of 0.372 m/s (evaluated at 25℃), VOC destruction efficiencies of 84, 92, 95 and 98% were obtained for the beds at temperature ranges of 200-300, 300-500, 400-700, and 500-700℃. These conditions corresponded to empty gas retention times of 1.07, 0.85, 0.41, and 0.39s, respectively, for the cited temperature ranges. Finally, it was estimated that electrical watts of approximately 0.10, 0.45, 1.78, 2.43 kWh were required for treating 1,000 m3 of the waste air stream, respectively, at bed temperature ranges of 200-300, 300-500, 400-700, and 500-700℃.
