As a case study of the Chinese subtitles in the American popular TV series Sex and the City, the thesis collects examples of subtitle translations with sexual references from the DVDs officially released in Taiwan. These examples are classified into four categories: sexual acts, sex organs and body description, relationships and sexually-related words, and other translation problems of sexual language. Based on Eugene Nida’s translation theory of dynamic equivalence and principles of communicative translation, the thesis discusses various translation problems regarding sexual language such as mistranslation/misinterpretation, unclear expressions, word-to-word translation and improper wording, and offers a suggested translation that better meets the purpose of providing entetainment and communicating with the audience. As a systematic analysis and research on Chinese subtitle translation, the thesis also serves as a practical reference for future translators.
