Undergoing a painful experience of the earthquake 921 in Taiwan, it was shown that the building structure of SRC is better than one of RC for considering seismic proof and green building. Therefore, SRC is increasingly applied for more structuring buildings in Taiwan. However, due to the shortage of skilled SRC engineers and technicians considerable amount of SRC high buildings are of inappropriate designs and unsafe in constructions. Thus, the quality control of SRC structure building is a very important issue for people’s property and their lives in Taiwan. The safety of SRC high building is mostly related to steel connections, for examples, connection of the Steel Column to Beam and connection of the Steel Beam to Beam. Many studies focus on the part of the Steel Column to Beam, only very few are on the Steel Beam to Beam, especially quality control of Steel-Column transition joint.
This study aims to explore the possible defaults and its causes that result from using Steel-Column transition joint in a SRC high building. The corresponding information of the current SRC structure buildings in Taiwan is collected and analyzed. The possible solutions are proposed to provide useful information for those lacking experience in SRC structure building and communications among designers, managers and constructors. It sincerely expects that the quality of SRC structure building in Taiwan can be raised so that the damage and destruction of the buildings will be minimized in the future.
