大衛‧艾蒙（David Almond）1998年於英國出版第一本青少年小說《史凱力》（Skellig），即獲得當年度英國卡內基獎（Carnegie Medal）、英國惠特布雷年度童書（Whitbread Children’s Book of the Year）等獎項。之後，創作經驗豐富的艾蒙至2008年陸續出版《曠野迷蹤》（Kit’s Wilderness）、《吃火的人》（The Fire-Eaters）等七本青少年小說，均深受文壇矚目，並榮獲多項獎項。
相較於青少年小說的寫實傳統，艾蒙的作品在寫實之外又融合神祕氛圍，遊走在真實與虛幻的書寫之間，使現實和魔幻的界線變得模糊難辨。與青少年寫實小說不同的是，其小說雖建立在現實時空基礎上，但當中揉合許多超自然、虛幻要素，但又不像奇幻小說直接拋開現實世界，建立於第二世界，或藉由某種媒介由現實進入奇幻世界。因此，艾蒙的作品往往展現現實與虛幻的交錯，模糊現實與夢幻，產生「魔幻寫實」的氛圍。
本研究藉由對大衛‧艾蒙的青少年小說作品研究，分析其魔幻寫實的敘事手法，並探究當中所呈現的課題。論文的行文方式先從魔幻寫實的發展及特徵開始，進而討論兒童文學中的魔幻寫實主義。另一方面，介紹作家大衛‧艾蒙的生平及創作歷程，再進入文本的分析，針對小說所呈現的「寫實」與「魔幻」元素進行解讀，觀察作者如何跨越現實與魔幻形塑一個不同的風格，並闡述藉由魔幻寫實手法，作家欲傳達之主題。

With his successful debut young adult fiction (YA fiction) Skellig (1998), David Almond (1951-) has become one of the most popular contemporary British writers for children and young adults. So far he has published seven novels for young adults, all of which have received highly critical acclaim and have been honored with a number of prestigious awards, including the Carnegie Medal (UK) and the Whitbread Children’s Book of the Year (UK).
Referred to by Janni Howker as the Gabriel Garcia Marquez of children’s fiction, Almond characterizes his works by his style of magical realism, which involves subtly blending magical elements in very realistic settings and creating a mysterious atmosphere. Ilene Cooper also claims that Almond is one of the foremost practitioners in children’s literature of magical realism. This study, therefore, aims to explore how magical realism is used in three of Almond’s YA novels: Skellig, Kit’s Wilderness (1999) and The Fire-Eaters (2003).
This thesis begins with a brief history of magical realism and a description of its major characteristics, continuing with an overview of Almond’s life and career. Next, it elaborates on the realistic elements, magical elements, and the amalgamation of the real and the magic in Almond’s YA fiction. Last, it centers the discussion on the effects of magical realism in Almond’s YA fiction.
This thesis concludes that while reading Almond’s children’s literary works, readers are positioned to experience a sense that the border between reality and fantasy is not necessarily clear-cut, and can be left intriguingly in doubt. Almond has successfully employed a bold combination of realism and magic.
