Background: To guarantee the quality of the Health Information System and ensure reliable Health Information, any system needs to have a systematic and periodic assessment. Assessment through the end users satisfaction ensure a proper and sustainable functioning of the system.
Objective: To evaluate the satisfaction level of end users using Health Information System and determine the factors associated at National Blaise Compaore Teaching Hospital in Burkina Faso.
Method: A cross sectional study using a structured and validated questionnaire adapted from the HMN tool was used to collect data in 203 ends users of Health information System (HIS) including Physician, Pharmacist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Radiographer, Nurse and Administration Staff. The study instruments were based on participant’s socio demographic characteristics and the assessment of HIS satisfaction. The data analysis was performed using SPSS 20.0. Reliability test was done after pilot study and before data collection in which the Cronbach’s alpha was 0.93. Multivariate analysis using a regression model was used to identify factors associated with end users satisfaction.
Results: Out of 203 end users, 93.1% had more than 30 years old, 53.2% were female and around 15% were physicians, 7% were pharmacists, 5% medical laboratory scientists, 4% radiographers, 51% nurses and 17% administrative staffs. Positive correlations were found between Health information system (HIS) satisfaction and all HIS components in term of inputs (r=0.81; P<0.001); process (r=0.94, P<0.001) and output (r=0.84, P<0.001). Factors associated with the satisfaction of end users using HIS included HIS inputs, processes, outputs, working experience at NBCTH, satisfaction of computer training provided at NBCTH, being nurse, radiographer, physician, and belonging to emergency department. Conclusion: The sustainability of HIS largely depends on end users during the design, the implementation and the functioning of the system. Their satisfaction is a key indicator of good or bad functioning. The study result indicated to conduct regular and refresher training, and assess the end users need and their interaction with the system on a regular basis to achieve maximum satisfaction.
