The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence, coping behaviors and management strategies of different-program nursing students suffering from sexual harassment in medical practice during this recent year. Methodologically, a cross-sectional survey with a self-administered structured questionnaire was implemented for this study. Subjects of this survey were recruited from the nursing students of five universities and three junior colleges by the purposive sampling method. A total of 624 sampling students were selected. Cronbach’s alpha, test-retest reliability, content validity and construct validity were conducted to assess the reliability and validity of the scales. Data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics.
The results shows:(1) There are 265 subjects experienced sexual harassment in medical practice, which is 42.5% of 624 sampling students. (2) Most nursing students think the best definition of sexual harassment belongs to the non-verbal category: “ The stroke with sexual purport but not your willingness.” (3) The frequency of verbal sexual harassment (9.63%) is higher than non-verbal sexual harassment (4.92%). The item to which the nursing students most often face is “Sexual watching which makes you embarrassed and reluctant.” (4) Male patients are main harassers no matter which kind of sexual harassment the nursing students meet with. In addition, the nursing students most frequently meet with sexual harassment in department of internal medicine and ward. (5) The coping behaviors that the nursing students most often adopt when they face to sexual harassment are “ I would take precaution against sexual harassers next time.” and “ I would watch out my dressing to avoid the close fitting or transparent clothes to protect myself.” (6) Most nursing students agree that preventive and management strategies of sexual harassment in medical practice have to be improved for the individual cognition and monitoring system. (7) In the coping behavior scale of verbal sexual harassment, the nursing students who take problem-solving action most often utilize the positive coping behaviors. However, the nursing students who use cognitive redefinition most frequently take the positive coping behaviors in the coping behavior scale of non-verbal sexual harassment.
The results of this study can provide the information for schools, hospitals, and clinical instructors to understand the prevalence, coping behaviors and management strategies of nursing students suffering from sexual harassment in medical practice. Also, the findings may be the useful references for designing the teaching materials and precautionary guidelines to conduct the nursing students how to prevent and manage the sexual harassment. The researcher suggests gender equality education should not only train the students for the preventive and coping strategies, but also strengthen and improve their problem-solving ability and coping skills in vocational nursing schools to reduce the occurrence of the sexual harassment.
