山地離島偏遠地區由於口腔醫療資源的缺乏，一直有著相當嚴重的口腔衛生問題，本研究調查了台東縣海端鄉、綠島鄉山地離島地區居民的口腔衛生狀況、民眾的牙科醫療需求及口腔衛生方面的知識和態度等資料。根據1997年WHO口腔衛生調查的基本方法第四版，利用Pathfinder調查方法，兩個鄉共有520位居民接受調查。
Deft指數平均：海端鄉3歲為5.5顆，齲齒率為86.7%，5歲為7.3顆，齲齒率為93.9%，7歲為8.2顆，齲齒率87.9%。綠島鄉3歲為4.0顆，齲齒率為76.2%，5歲為6.2顆，齲齒率為83.3%，7歲為8.6顆，96.7%。DMFT指數平均：海端鄉12歲為3.9顆，齲齒率為94.9%，15歲為5.6顆，齲齒率為95.0%。綠島鄉12歲為4.2顆，齲齒率為90.0%，15歲為5.7顆，齲齒率為79.2%。填補率都很低。在社區牙周指數方面，有牙結石佔多數，35-44歲：海端鄉61.9%(女性)、75.0%(男性)、綠島鄉54.8%(女性)、74.4%(男性)。對於現在仍嚼食檳榔者，罹患嚼食檳榔者黏膜，海端鄉有16.7%，綠島鄉有34.4%。綠島鄉有較高現象為15歲女生有21.4 %需要做1個單位的贗復體治療。
影響罹患齲齒之相關因素：年齡、口腔清潔之習慣、每天吃零食次數、性別、教育程度、口腔衛生知識、口腔衛生態度及口腔衛生行為等。
台灣地區境內共有三十個山地鄉，八個離島，而山地鄉原住民及離島民眾因受環境所限，長久以來醫療資源普遍缺乏，兼以交通不便，就醫不易，除少數依賴當地的衛生所提供服務外，對於口腔醫療保健服務，一直存在著極大的需求及需要。而這次研究目標除了了解口腔狀況外，這些結果可應用於做為口腔衛生服務策略之建議及研究。

The aboriginal and remote areas are poor in medical and dental care resources. There have been a serious oral health problem. The purpose of this research is to realize the oral condition, need of dental care, oral health knowledge and attitude in Haiduan and Green Island villagers, Taitung county. Totally choose 520 people in this research by Pathfinder Survey Method (Stratified sampling design) of oral Health Surveys 4th (1997 WHO).
Mean deft and caries prevalance rate were 5.5 (86.7%) at 3-year-old, 7.3 (93.9%) at 5-year-old, 8.2 (87.9%) at 7-year-old in Haiduan, 4.0(76.2%) at 3-year-old, 6.2 (83.3%) at 5-year-old, 8.6 (96.7%) at 7-year-old in Green Island. Mean DMFT and caries prevalance rate were 3.9(94.9%) at 12-year-old,5.6 (95.0%) at 15-year-old in Haiduan, 4.2(90.0%) at 12-year-old, 5.7 (79.2%) at 15-year-old in Green Island. Filling rate is very low. The calculus of community peridontal index(CPI) is 61.9%(female), 75.0% (male) at 35-44-year-olds in Haiduan, 54.8% (female), 74.4% (male) at 35-44- year-olds in Green Island. For those who chewing betel quid currently, 16.7% (Haiduan), 34.4% (Green Island) had betel chewer''s mucosa. Prosthetic need is higher (21.4% female) at 15-year- old in Green Island.
The caries was influenced by age, oral cleaning habits, frequency of sweets intake, genders, education levels, oral hygiene knowledge, oral hygiene attitudes and oral hygiene behaviors and so on.
There are 30 aboriginal townships and 8 islands in the Taiwan. These areas are relatively poor in medical and dental care resources and inadequate in communication. People often depend on the limited medical and dental care services offered by the local health stations. There are many demands and needs on oral health care services for the aborigines and remote area. The aims of this research to realize the oral status, another some implications are suggested for oral health services policy and research.
