本文以佛傳故事的踰城出家神聖事蹟為主，研究印度初期佛教藝術的踰城出家存世石雕作品之圖像學意義為重點。作品年代為公元前三世紀至公元四世紀，地點包括Bharhut、Sanchi、Amaravati、Nagarjunakonda、Gandhara等地區存世有關踰城出家的浮雕作品。由於存世浮雕均來自Stupa或佛教紀念建築物，因而也說明Stupa的象徵概念、Stupa周邊裝飾組織，以及公元五世紀前，印度佛教建築紀念物的藝術風格，作為探討踰城出家浮雕作品的背景資料。以梵文英譯佛傳經典和漢譯佛傳經典，記載踰城出家的事蹟相互補充。為方便說明整個踰城出家的神奇事蹟，分為出家當天夜晚王宮生活、出家當時、出家之後立即結果等三部份，每一部份以一小結為結語，最後綜合歸納出一個結論，發現整個踰城出家在圖像學特色方面呈現對比的畫面與豐富的宗教意涵。
從印度初期佛教藝術的踰城出家，就圖像學角度而言，無論就藝術形式、情緒表達和宗教義涵等而言，整個踰城出家呈現兩極對比。以藝術形式來說，有動態與靜態兩種畫面的對比。例如，太子睜開眼睛決意出家和耶輸陀羅閉眼睡覺; 還有出家當時，眾天神抬馬蹄喧嘩熱鬧，而王宮城民皆入眠; 出家之後，太子神情安詳而王宮人員慌亂憂傷。就情緒表達來說，有熱鬧與安靜氣氛的對比。例如，出家當天夜晚，太子心中煩憂，眾綵女熟睡; 出家當時，眾天神雀躍而車匿憂心重重; 出家之後，太子心情平靜而車匿白馬悲泣哀鳴。就宗教意涵而言，有精神層次與物質層次的對比。例如，出家當天夜晚，太子心中思惟生老病死解脫之道，而眾綵女沈醉於聲色之中; 出家當時，太子欲求寂靜之心而車匿憂心太子將受肉體之苦; 出家之後，太子堅定意志朝著解脫之道行進，而王宮人員尚籠罩於離別悲傷中。依圖像學意義來說，整個踰城出家的浮雕反映佛教的真理，亦即斷除慾念捨棄五欲，追求心靈上的解脫。
