本文主旨是藉由人口統計資料，係了解八卦台地的人口成長與空間分布之變化。研究範圍以台1、台14及台3省道；137、152縣道所圍繞而成的八卦台地區域，涵蓋十鄉鎮市、112村里。日治時期台灣總督府以「農業培養工業，以工業發展農業」的治台策略引導之下，八卦台地產業發展主要以經濟作物為主，並設置工廠初步加工。明治39年 (1906) 於彰化設立鳳梨工廠投產，翌年遷址員林；明治44年 (1911) 中央製糖株式會社南投糖廠創立於三塊厝庄，工廠設立吸引人口的遷入，使得三塊厝年平均成長率達64.53‰。整體而言，從1905至1939年八卦台地人口數在35年間成長1.84倍，主要集中八卦台地的北部。人口成長的主要原因是社會比較穩定，醫藥及公共衛生的改進以及產業的發展。八卦台地於日治前期、中期人口數歷年都呈現正成長的趨勢，但至後期之昭和12年 (1937) 人口數則首度出現負成長的現象，其原因仍有待深究。
現代時期八卦台地人口增加16.1％，人口成長主要仰賴自然增加，但由於自然增加率逐年降低且至2003年至2005年低於社會減少率，使得人口開始出現負成長的現象。是以，現代時期八卦台地的人口成長之趨勢受社會增減的影響甚深，進而運用簡單迴歸分析1998年至2006年八卦台地的人口成長有81.0%可歸因年平均淨遷移率之影響。再者，不論是原居地或是目的地，遷移者皆以短程距離為主，此現象顯然與距離遠近有極大的關聯，亦符合E. G. Ravenstein所提出的「遷移法則」。此外，在遷移者的特質方面，以年輕人、女性以及無偶遷移者為多。

The paper is attempting to understand the variations of population growth and distribution in Pakua Tableland on the base of demographic statistics data. The study area is surrounded by Route 1, 14, 3 and County Rd.137, 152, including 10 townships or 112 villages. Taiwan Colonial Government had followed the policies of“developing industry through agriculture and expanding agriculture through industry.”Accordingly, sugarcane and pineapple had been important economic crops in Pakua Tableland, and further Pineapple Factory and Nantou Sugar Factory was established in 1906 and 1911. Nantou Sugar Factory in san kuai cuo zhuang attracted many immigrants and caused the annual mean growth rate to reach 64.53 ‰. As a whole,
the population in Pakua Tableland had grown 1.84 times from 1905 until 1939, and the growth area mainly concentrated in northern Pakua Tableland. The population growth of Pakua Tableland had been due to social stability, medical and public health improvement and industrial development. Before 1936, the population in Pakua Tableland had increased, but it declined for the first time in 1937.
The population in Pakua Tableland have increased 16.1% during the modern period (1981-2006). In recent years, the rate of natural increase is lower than that of rate social increase, and population growth rate appears negative situation between 2003 and 2005. Thus, a high correlation (81.0%) is found between migration and population growth from 1998 to 2006. In addition, most migrants in Pakua Tableland proceed a short distance. Females are somewhat more migratory than males;moreover, young and single adults are the majority in all types of migrants, and the results accord with Ravenstein’s laws.
