As the public transportation in Taiwan has been well-developed, it has gradually become means of commute for more and more people on a daily basis. However, as an increasing number of accidents happen, especially for the mass rapid transit (MRT), safety and evacuation plans are worthy of our attention. This research aims to study students’ understanding and knowledge of taking the MRT and its evacuation plan. Based on the safety guidelines provided by the website of the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation, a situational teaching plan geared towards awareness of the MRT safety has been designed. As parts of effort to provide students with an opportunity to personally experience evacuation, this teaching plan also involves an evacuation camp outside of a classroom setting. By comparing the learning outcomes before and after the teaching, this research explores the feasibility of applying situation teaching in the MRT safety education. This research selects thirty second-year students in an elementary school in New Taipei City to conduct the above-mentioned experiment. Descriptive analysis and t-test will be used to analyze relevant data resulted from the experiment. Major findings are as follows: 1. The situational teaching enhances students’ safety awareness of taking the MRT. 2. No significant difference in terms of teaching results among students with different backgrounds are observed. 3. The situational teaching method is well-accepted among students.
