My passion for this painting project “The Phantom” is not only due to my obsession of operas and dances, but also the inspiration of the novel “The Phantom of the Opera” and the experience of visiting the Palais Garnier, the opera house in Paris. “The Phantom” contains three themes: “Linger”, “Shiver” and “Awaken”. This painting project talks about the story that the underground lake flooded and caused all the decoration, chambers and sculptures dipping in the water, and that nobody would come to the opera house again but the phantom, who is able to live in the water, lingered back and forth to communicate with all the decoration and sculptures, like doing some silent performances. I chose oil painting to express this story “The Phantom”, and used some new methods to improve my painting skill. Also, I tried to create profound meanings when I added some symbols in the paintings. I also used grounded theory to analyze all my data of “The Phantom” project in order to find the profound motivation I had in painting Palais Garnier over ten years, and to find self-understanding in the formation of this creative project. After I analyzed all my data, the most profound thing I found in my motivation is very simple. It is the feeling of conflict, like beauties in the failure. This kind of beauty is almost everywhere after I start to use multi-perspectives to view my own life. After going through the process of analysing the data of my creation, I found that I preferred to engage in painting my own personality. The personality reflected a fact that I was isolating myself form the outside world, and I thought that I must find a way to shift the situation of having my heart closed. While I found the way to carry out a plan, miraculously, the plan began to affect my practice of “The Phantom”. Artwork is the best narrators to describe an artist’s living life. Art creation and the artist’s life can’t be separated. The practical process of “The Phantom” brought out some points of view that made me open my heart to enjoy my lifetime, my own culture, my friendship, and made me believe that the beauties of real life will make me feel much happier and more powerful than my inner world could do. Also, the study of this art project made me believe that the beauties of life will bring out more inspirations in my artworks, and that the inspirations will become the best sources for my creative projects in the future.
