In recent years, smart phones have brought unprecedented changes in our life. Smart phones have became necessities and one of the most important devices for people. According to previous relevant researches, the vocal communications among people has been replaced by instant text messages more frequently, which is driven by mobile technology and acceptable prices. However, some scholars feel concern about that many instant text messages may cause negative impacts. It is needed to be noticed that face-to-face and social communications gradually become poor quality due to communication that is interrupted by instant text messages from smart phones. This paper aims to examine the effect of the persistent interruption by instant text messages toward communication quality and social attraction in the workplaces. The 2X2 experiments revealed that communication quality was negatively affected by instant text messages. In contrast, the social attraction was not affected by instant text messages, even if the respondents were unfamiliar with each other.
