羅伯‧舒曼 ( Robert Schumann, 1810-1856 ) 的作品5《克拉拉主題即興曲》(Impromptus on a Theme of Clara Wieck)，寫於1833年，是舒曼早期創作中非常傑出的作品。舒曼雖然在標題上賦予“即興曲”的名稱，但在結構上，則是承襲了十八世紀古典變奏曲的寫法，可謂以「即興曲」為名，行「變奏曲」之實。舒曼並非音樂史上有此創舉的第一人，在1827年，奧國作曲家法蘭茲‧舒伯特 ( Franz Schubert, 1797-1828 )，即寫了一組包括四首曲子的即興曲集，其中最著名的第三首《降B大調即興曲》D. 935/3 ( Impromptu in B-flat major)，即是一首包含了五個變奏段落的變奏曲。
在古典時期眾多傑出的變奏曲作品中，路德維希‧范‧貝多芬 ( Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827 ) 的作品35《英雄變奏曲》(Eroica Variation) 可說是最經典的範例之一。在舒曼的《克拉拉主題即興曲》中，可清楚地看到貝多芬《英雄變奏曲》寫作技巧對他的影響，即兩首作品皆引用一個重要的低音主題貫穿全曲。舒伯特在他的《降B大調即興曲》中使用了變奏曲式，而舒曼則將這樣的概念在《克拉拉主題即興曲》中加以延續擴大。值得一提的是，因舒曼十分崇拜貝多芬與舒伯特這兩位偉大的前輩作曲家，遂將他們的創作手法與自己的寫作靈感加以結合，並以他獨特的變奏技巧完成這首《克拉拉主題即興曲》。這首作品代表了十九世紀鋼琴曲的一種突破與革新，雖作曲手法並非舒曼首創，但後續也極少作曲家再以類似的方式創作。本篇詮釋報告共分為五個章節：第一章敘述十九世紀鋼琴即興曲的起源與發展；第二章探討舒曼鋼琴作品的類別與特質；第三章說明舒曼《克拉拉主題即興曲》的創作背景，並藉由1833年與1850年兩個版本的比較，了解它們的主要異同點；《克拉拉主題即興曲》的結構與各變奏樂段技巧之使用將在第四章做詳細的分析；最後的第五章，闡述本人在演練《克拉拉主題即興曲》過程中的心得分享。在結語篇之後的附錄中，列出沃日謝克作品7 / 1《即興曲》以及馬施奈《即興曲集》作品22 / 6的完整樂譜以茲參考，最後附加本場演奏會之節目冊與DVD影音資料。
