Research has shown that individuals with ADHD often have poor executive function and social impairments, and may be negatively affected by the long-term poor social relationships. This study aims to explore relationships among inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity characteristics, executive functions and social relationships of children, hoping to further understand how this knowledge can be applied in future clinical practice. We recruited 133 grade 5 to 6 elementary school children and their parents in Taipei. Children's executive functions, inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity characteristics and social relationships were measured using the Traditional Chinese Childhood Executive Functioning Inventory, Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham, Version IV Scale and the Taiwan Relationship Inventory for Children and Adolescents respectively. We found that all variables of executive functions and inattention and hyperactive/impulsive characteristics were either moderately or highly correlated in elementary school children. Further analyses were conducted in two gender groups separately. Poor inhibition and negative father relationship, positive peer relationship, inattention and positive peer relationship were shown to be significantly positively correlated in the boys. On the other hand, in the girls, poor working memory was negatively correlated with positive father relationship, but positively correlated with negative father relationship. Poor inhibition was positively correlated with negative father relationship. Inattention was negatively correlated with negative teacher relationship. Compared to the boys, the girls felt more supportive relationships with their mothers, teachers and peers. The boys could still feel peer support even in the case of poor executive functions and inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity characteristics. Children's executive functions may affect social behaviors through inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity characteristics. Finally, low levels of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity characteristics may have positive effects on social relationships. For future research, it is suggested that some of the specific social variables be focused, and the causal model from executive functions to specific social situations via inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity characteristics be verified with ample sample sizes.
