The conflict between land use and environment has increased over time. Sometimes development of an area does not fit with its capacity causing environmental problems such as
flood and landslides. Good land use planning is needed to establish the sustainable development. Land suitability analysis is important for land use planning. In this study,
residential suitability analysis was designed to measure and evaluate the capability of land for residential use in Kelapa Gading District, North Jakarta, Indonesia. Multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) integrated with GIS (Geographic Information System) tools helped determine if land was highly suitable, moderately suitable, marginally suitable, or not suitable for residential use. Six physical factors were considered: slope, soil texture, soft soil depth, flood frequency, and riparian zone. Land in the Kelapa Gading District was mainly marginally suitable, making it suitable for residential use, but there are some requirements that have to be fulfilled. Some existing residences were built in unsuitable areas, making them susceptible to floods. This study applied MCDM with GIS tools in a real world and could be useful for establishing sustainable development in the future.
