By using polarized optical, atomic force, and scanning electron microscopies (POM, AFM, SEM), wide-angle and small-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD and SAXS), and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) characterization, mechanisms and correlations between lamellar reassembly, phase separation domains, and birefringence types in poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/poly(1,4-butylene adipate) (PBA) crystalline/crystalline system were investigated in detail. In PHB/PBA (50/50) blend system, crystallization and phase separation occur spontaneously; and the lamellar patterns are governed by two competing processes. The formation of the PBA phase-separated domains could affect the birefringence types of spherulites; and the phase behavior between PHB and PBA is a key factor for the transition of birefringence types. Depending on the sizes and numbers of the PBA phase-separated domains, the optical birefringence (positive v.s negative types) of PHB spherulites may change reversely from the original positive-type spherulite at Tc = 90 °C to negative-type spherulite at Tc = 45 °C. Moreover, during the second-step crystallization at RT, the optical sign of birefringence alters from PHB positive type to PBA negative type due to the crystallization of PBA. A new mechanism of how the phase domains affect the lamellae assembly and further change the birefringence types of spherulites in polymers has been clarified upon.
