物料需求計劃已是製造業中廣泛使用的工具，物料需求計劃經由物料單可將預測的最終產品迅速轉換成物料需求量，但無法提供經濟批量。近幾年來研究批量問題的文獻日益增多，但要選擇一個合適的批量技術卻是十分困難的事，其之所以如此困難是由於著述的散落，批量理論的爆炸性成長以及績效特質未能適切地測試和比較出來，且批量技術的選擇也因需求的本質不同而複雜。
故本研究首先由文獻整理各種批量方法，得知典型的批量問題目的在求得訂購成本與儲存成本和之最低。但在實際環境中，許多因素將導致缺貨，所以批量訂定時，缺貨成本亦是一項重要考慮因素。本研究欲多加考慮缺貨條件，調整批量方法的演算法﹔並以執行時間和總成本做為績效的衡量基準，對有效性的因素作測試。
研究結果發現 : 在總成本方面，Wagner-Whitin和Branch&Bound在任何條件下都有最佳解﹔但執行時間的效率卻非常差。
