A Chinese version of expert consultation system for IBM compatible personal computer for the diagnosis and managment of diseases on grapevine was established using C-language of Borland International Co.. The system contains guideline infor- mations for the identification of a total of 39 grapevine di- seases which include 1 nematode, 13 fungal, 7 viral and 18 phy- siological diseases or disorders. The contained informations were shownon the monitor screen by the following six main cate- gories: 1, an index sector for tracking the consulted disease; 2, a computer guided inference-path sector for disease diag- nosis; 3, a knowledge bank sector for the disease management including metods for chemical and/or non-chemical controls;4, an editorial sector for the user-manipulatable corrections or imput of new knowledge basis for either disease diagnosis or management; 5,a data output sector for the print-out or demon- stration of informations in the knowledge bank which include disease control methodologies and color pictures of disease symptoms; and 6, a system support sector for general computer aids as well as an inquiring telephone lists for available grapevine disease experts around the country. In the computer- guided disease diagnosis sector, an"if--then--else" based backward-chaining inference model was followed for the stepwise identification of an unknown target disease using obser-vable symptom characteristics on plant host as the main criteria. And for the operation of this inference machinery, a total of 424 guiding rules which were grouped into 21 routines, were constructed in the knowledge bank on the basis of distinctive symptom characteristics of grapevines at bud break, full growth, fruiting, as well as harvesting and postharvest stages.
