Cam-follower mechanisms often operate under the condition that the driving input to cams is a constant speed. This work presents an alternative approach, based on the concept of controlling the cam input driving speed which is academically innovative, for improving the motion characteristicsof cam- follower mechanisms. A DSP-based servo control system is established for studying the feasibility of the variable speed cam mechanism system. Constraints and systematic design procedure for generating an appropriate cam speed trajectory which has the function to reduce the peak values of the state of motion are developed. The $H^\infty$ control theory is applied to design a robust servo controller for meeting desirable performance in the presence of uncertainties. The experimental results obtained from a prototype system have confirmed that the proposed approach has tremendous potential for further research to link with industrial applications.
